A roar of cheers swept through the Normandy Arena as Alabama took the stage on Saturday, July 24 at the Wicomico Civic Center.
Many attendees had been waiting more than two years to see the show.
Originally scheduled for Nov. 23, 2019, the Alabama concert was postponed to Oct. 3, 2020 due to the lead singer’s ongoing complications with cluster migraines and vertigo.
After COVID-19 hit, it was no surprise what happened next – the Oct. 3 show was postponed following guidance from public health officials.
“After the second postponement, it was a waiting game,” said Katie Rouse, deputy director of Wicomico County Recreation, Parks, Tourism and the Civic Center. “Once indoor gathering restrictions were lifted, we took a moment to exhale and celebrate, and then we got to work.”
The concert was not only the first large-scale event in the Civic Center since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, it also became the venue’s highest-grossing event of all time.
“We hosted Alabama in 1985 and 1987 and those were big shows,” Rouse said. “We knew this show would be big, too, but to see record-breaking sales – and after a pandemic – it was so uplifting. There’s no better indication that live entertainment is making a quick and strong recovery.”
The Civic Center welcomed nearly 4,000 guests the evening of the long-awaited concert.
“Our staff heard countless attendees say how excited they were to be at the show,” Rouse said. “It was great to see the venue brimming with energy again. We’re working on building out our entertainment schedule and are excited to keep this momentum going.”
