The Wicomico Civic Center hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for its over $10 million renovation on Monday, Aug. 3.
The event was co-hosted by the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce.
The long-awaited renovation includes an expanded box office and lobby, safety barriers along the north and west sides of the venue, improved wayfinding, improved ADA access, and an expanded food court.
“These renovations ensure that this facility will continue serving the residents and visitors for many years to come,” said Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano. “They enhance the experience for everyone who walks through these doors, strengthen our ability to attract new events, support our local economy and provide an outstanding venue for recreation, entertainment and community gatherings.”
Wicomico Recreation, Parks & Tourism Director Steve Miller called back to the venue’s history during his remarks. “
June 22, 1977… that is the day that this building here burned to the ground,” said Miller. “In the days that followed, the community rallied together, and their resolve was, ‘This is OUR building, this is our place, this place matters to us,’ and they were determined to build it bigger and better than it ever was before.”
And just over two years later, in the spring of 1980, the community had done just that.
The recent renovation project represents the single-biggest investment that’s happened at the venue since the Civic Center was rebuilt.
“In doing this project, we are reaffirming what they said nearly half a century ago: This is OUR building, this is our place, this place matters to us, and we’ve made it bigger and better than it’s ever been before,” said Miller.
Funding for the project came from a $5.5 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), combined with over $4.3 million from Wicomico County and $495,000 from the state.

The Wicomico Civic Center's food and beverage concessions will be cashless effective Friday, Jan. 24.
Concessions will accept Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, debit cards, Apply Pay and Google Wallet. Cash will not be accepted.
Cashless concessions have become an industry standard over the past few years. Benefits include speedy checkouts; protection against theft and loss; and fewer touchpoints, minimizing the risk of germ transmission.
The box office will continue to accept both cash and cards for ticket sales and program registrations.

The Wicomico Civic Center will break ground on a long-awaited $9.8 million renovation later this month.
In the spring of 2022, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) announced a $5.5 million federal grant to make major improvements to the now 45-year-old venue.
The federal grant funds will be combined with $4.3 million in state and local funding.
"The planned improvements will total more than $9.8 million, representing the single largest investment in this building since it was rebuilt after the fire," said Steve Miller, director of Wicomico Recreation, Parks & Tourism. "We are hopeful that this investment will attract new events and generate additional economic activity in the county."
Plans include an expanded box office and lobby, safety barriers along the north and west sides of the venue, improved wayfinding, improved ADA access, an expanded food court and better connectivity between the Civic Center and the Wicomico High School campus.
The project is expected to be complete in roughly one year.
