The Governor’s Challenge, sponsored by the Bank of Delmarva, has grown over the years to become the largest holiday basketball tournament in the country. In its 38th year, the event will bring 120 teams to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and surrounding high schools from Dec. 26-29. 

This year's format will include a DMVelite Showcase division featuring 26 top teams from around the region and beyond, as well as a girls' showcase division featuring five teams, a varsity boys' division and a varsity girls' division. Teams from Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., California, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia and Canada will participate in this year's tournament. This is the first year a team has traveled from the west coast for the tournament. 

On Wednesday, Dec. 26, a Skills Challenge and Three-Point Contest will start at about 9 p.m. On Friday, Dec. 28, another Three-Point Contest will take place, followed by the Slam Dunk Contest.


Single-day general admission tickets are $10 each, and reserved floor seats are $25 each. Weeklong general admission passes are also available for $30 each. Fees may apply. I just wanted to tell you how nice everything was last Saturday for Megan and Brian’s reception. So many guests mentioned how delicious the food was, especially the crab cakes (please tell Chef Larry!). I have to tell you that the Civic Center staff was wonderful! Many guests commented how friendly and helpful they were! One staff person even brought out two bottles of cold water for Megan and Brian when they left to go on their honeymoon! That was so kind and unexpected! (They had a 1 ½ hour drive.) I even received a card in the mail yesterday from my Aunt and Uncle saying how nice the reception was and how friendly and helpful the Civic Center staff was!
